Do you have a list of unfinished projects? Or several great ideas that you’ve never done anything with? Perhaps a pile of hobby projects you’ve started that are now taking up space in the spare room or the garage?
I’m a productivity expert. I work hard, I work smart and I get a lot done each day. However I can find it difficult to actually finish projects, with the last 20%, 10% or even 1% lingering. Unfinished projects can be overwhelming, draining and guilt inducing. So why don’t we just get them done?
My not-done experience
I remember when I finished studying for my CPA – I had completed all the assignments and exams and all I had to do was complete the 8 page form and get a couple of referees for my work and submit it to the CPA Australia for my certification. It took me 2 years from the end of my study until the time I submitted that piece of paper. That task took me about 2 hours to do from start to finish over a week or so. It was not a big job – I had just made it a big job in my head and I’m embarrassed that it took me so long. (That was back in 2004 and it still hurts!).
After that I decided never to let something get that far ‘behind’ again. And of course I have. In preparation for this Finish-A-Thon I decided to deep clean my office. I wanted my office to look beautiful (for skyping with you) and to feel the positive energy that comes from a beautiful space. I cleared out a few trays of papers that have been hanging around for 2 years. It feels so good to clear that backlog. I consider myself to be blackbelt in productivity systems so I doubt anything will get to that state again but you never know …. I’m only human…and so are you. Let’s work together to clear some backlog and feel the peace that comes with only ‘current’ items on your lists.
Why is finishing so hard?
Finishing can be hard for a number of reasons, including:
- the thrill of starting a new project wears off and the project becomes ‘work’
- once a project is underway we can realise it isn’t going to deliver the outcomes we hoped
- we get caught up in the day-to-day, spending time ‘in’ our business and not enough ‘on’ our business
- perfectionism causes paralysis
- the effort to finish outweighs the benefit
But most often the reason finishing is hard, and projects stay on our to-do list indefinitely, is that we get ‘stuck’. We reach part of the project that just isn’t working. There is an issue that we can’t quite resolve. Think about your unfinished projects. If your schedule was cleared and you were full of energy could you finish them? Or are you stuck?
There is a solution: the Finish-A-Thon
